ARES Employee Receives Space Flight Awareness Award
WASHINGTON, D.C. – NASA presented ARES employee Thad Gutshall with the Space Flight Awareness Honoree Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to NASA’s Human Space Flight programs. This award is considered to be one of the highest and most prestigious awards available to NASA and industry employees.
As a Risk and Program Management Specialist at ARES, Mr. Gutshall has conducted process analyses to map the key safety and mission assurance (SMA) roles and checks-and-balances that help reduce risks associated with NASA’s space flight programs. Mr. Gutshall has also trained others at NASA to develop these SMA process analysis maps, which feature graphical representations of a program’s SMA plan. Each map identifies organizations, key assurance processes, and personnel who have performed oversight of critical flight systems. Over the past five years, SMA process analysis maps have become essential in helping both the NASA Chief Safety and Mission Assurance Officer and the NASA Chief Engineer prepare to make crucial “Go/No Go” decisions about the readiness of Space Shuttle Missions. This award highlights one offering from ARES’ portfolio of technology solutions as a groundbreaking product that adds clarity and reduces risk within intricate operational and technical processes.
“Thad has been instrumental in the creation and development of process analyses that directly support the NASA Office of Safety and Mission Assurance in preparing for launches,” said Captain Robert Curbeam, Senior Vice President of ARES’ Aerospace and Defense Division and former NASA Astronaut. “I applaud him and I am proud to have team members at ARES with his caliber of innovation and commitment, in this and in all our client efforts.”
