SYRISTM

SYndrome Reporting Information System

SYRIS

The SYRIS tool is a Real-time, Web-based Early Warning System that enables Early Identification Of and Response To Outbreaks of Infectious Disease and Bioterrorism

The SYRIS system is a state-of-the-art software tool for the detection of infectious diseases of public health importance, whether they are human or animal in nature, including bio-terrorism and other emerging diseases.  The SYRIS tool is a syndrome-based reporting system that targets clinical judgments by medical and veterinary professionals of their seriously ill patients, facilitates immediate 2-way communication among these health care officials and public health officials concerning their patients, and then acts as an early warning system for preventing the spread of infectious disease or limiting the effectiveness of a bio-terrorism attack.  Hours matter - immediate action by our health care providers is required to detect and prevent the spread of vaccine-treatable disease or isolate and contain an outbreak of bio-terrorism.  Since the vast majority of these exotic biological diseases cannot be treated with current available medications, prevention via early detection is the only effective means of limiting their impact.  Our Public Health Departments recognize that they must employ state-of-the-art surveillance systems to prevent epidemics and the spread of disease.  The SYRIS system is the answer, and has been recognized as such by such groups as the Center for Health Transformation and California's Little Hoover Commission.

The SYRIS system has helped public health departments identify, detect, and respond to public health emergencies since it was developed in 2003, including Hurricane Katrina (read the case study).  One of our current customers chose the SYRIS tool after performing an extensive evaluation of syndromic surveillance systems.  If you need better public health situational awareness, we invite you to explore how the SYRIS system can improve your current capabilities.

The following are screen captures of the real-time web-alerts and geographical mapping capabilities of the SYRIS system.

Key Benefits

The SYRIS system rapidly identifies disease outbreaks, thus limiting their impact on our communities.  The SYRIS system is ready to help our communities stay well informed and on top of their public health care status.

The SYRIS system provides:
  • Real-time, Syndrome-Based Reporting Tool
  • 2-Way Real-time Communication System - 24/7
  • Automated, Immediate 'Alerts' to Public Health Officials (PHO's)
  • Health 'Alerts' to Vets, Doctors, Hospitals, & Schools
  • Web-Based Tool for Easy Syndrome Entry and Communication
  • Geographic Mapping of Disease Outbreaks
  • Connects All Health Care Providers to a Common Database
  • Instantaneous Geographic Mapping of Disease Outbreaks
  • Full compliance with the requirements of Public Law 109-417 (the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act)
The SYRIS system is a Solid Communication Network and Common Database that Directly Connects:
  • Physicians
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Veterinarians
  • Animal Control
  • Public Health Officials
  • Laboratories
  • Coroners
  • School Nurses
  • EMR's

How is the SYRIS System Different?

  • It is the only system to use “Active Collection” for gathering disease data.   By using "Active Collection," the data has immediate relevance to our community's public health surveillance measures and can improve their timeliness in reacting to specific outbreaks of disease.
  • It is the Only System that Captures Animal Disease Data.  Infectious disease outbreaks in animals are often a precursor to similar outbreaks in humans, thus our need to share vital animal health information with our Public Health Officials.

  • It collects data from a wide range of health professionals including:  health care workers, school nurses, laboratories, EMT's, coroners, plus animal control officers, veterinarians, and wildlife rehabilitators

  • It uses clinical judgment data by medical professionals who have direct patient contact, thus limiting "false positives"

  • It uses a simple Syndrome Reporting structure - 6 Human Infectious Disease Syndromes & 9 Animal Infectious Disease Syndromes

The SYRIS System Enables Real-time Analysis of Data from the Health Care Community and Public Health Officials

Key Features

Simple Reporting Process:
  • Statistically, doctors will only use the SYRIS system to report < 0.5% of patients
  • Reporting a case takes approximately 15 - 30 seconds
  • Doesn’t require specific clinical knowledge of infectious diseases - only syndromes reported
  • Works on any platform that includes JAVATM
  • Instantaneous geographical mapping of reported diseases outbreaks
Instant Feedback from Public Health Officials (PHOs):
  • PHOs are typically the best experts for local disease analysis
  • PHOs can quickly correlate all SYRIS data via mapping software and statistical analysis
  • PHOs can then quickly notify all communities of early outbreaks of important infectious diseases
  • Communities can act quickly to contain, treat and prevent the spread of any disease

Results

  • Minimizes “False Alarms” & Over-Reaction
  • Sensitive to time when hours matter
  • Enables real-time data analysis by all providers
  • Effective without precise diagnosis
  • Invokes Real-Time Clinician Judgment of Disease Severity
  • Avoids Passive Data Mining “Noisy” Data or Statistical Randomness
  • Facilitates Fast and Easy Reporting - < 30 sec.
  • Real-Time Capabilities help avoid the High Costs (Money / Time) of responding to “False Alarms” by:
    • receiving real-time clinical judgment data
    • instant geographic mapping of all outbreak data
    • avoiding over-reaction to non-threats or scare tactics

Current Installations of the SYRIS System

  • Department of Health, Lubbock, Texas
  • Texas Department of State Health Services, Health Services Region 1
