ARES’ knowledge of risk methodologies is extensive, spanning probabilistic analysis, deterministic analysis, fault tree analysis (including system/subsystem failure analysis and the ability to perform risk-based trade studies), root cause analysis, uncertainty analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, parametric analysis, event tree analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, reliability analysis, process hazard analysis, consequence analysis, and decision analysis. ARES’ personnel possess deep expertise in modeling complex systems to identify risks or vulnerabilities and predict performance, and are often engaged to design holistic risk management systems on complex projects. In particular, ARES has unique, industry-leading expertise in probabilistic risk assessments (PRAs), performing some of the world’s most complex PRAs on behalf of NASA and the DoD. ARES has performed PRAs for the complex technological systems aboard the International Space Station and for fighter and bomber aircraft.

ARES leverages our extensive risk management capabilities, spanning fault tree analysis (including system/subsystem failure analysis), root cause analysis, event tree analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, reliability analysis, process hazard analysis, consequence analysis, and decision analysis to evaluate failure information from a system’s components in order to develop probability distributions that the system will be able to perform safely. ARES can model complex systems to identify risks or vulnerabilities and predict performance.
We combine our quantitative methods with in-depth knowledge of hazards present within complex nuclear, space, and defense systems. We have significant experience with hazards ranging from non-nuclear hazards (e.g., chemicals, high explosives) to the highest level of nuclear hazards (e.g., nuclear explosives and weapons). ARES’ personnel have extensive experience in efficiently and cost-effectively developing DOE Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs) to comply with 10 CFR 830 and NRC Safety Analysis Reports (SARs) for initial operation, updating DSAs to meet current criteria and requirements, and preparing un-reviewed safety question analyses and documentation. In performing these tasks, ARES uses our full suite of safety analysis and risk assessment services, ranging from qualitative assessments to detailed quantitative analyses. As needed, ARES leverages our engineering competency to provide specialized support, such as seismic and electrical, and documentation support in the form of system design descriptions.
