Recruitment Fraud Warning
It has come to our attention that various individuals and organizations have contacted people offering false employment opportunities with ARES. Such scams are fraudulent and intended to steal money or identity from the victims. By making you aware of this, we hope to avoid and ultimately stop victims from falling for this scam.

Please do not provide any personal or financial information and do not send any money to anyone you suspect of recruitment fraud.

What is Recruitment Fraud?

Recruitment fraud is a sophisticated scheme that offers fictitious job opportunities to people. This type of fraud is normally done through online services such as fake websites, or through unsolicited emails claiming to be from ARES. These emails request recipients to provide personal information, sign fake letters of employment, organize visas and ultimately request payments to submit false applications.

How to Identify Recruitment Fraud

  • You didn’t contact them; they contacted you: They say they found your resume online. They either offer you a job right away or say they want to interview you. Sometimes the scammers will try to entice you by saying that you made the cut and they are interviewing the finalists for the job.
  • The email does not come from an official “” email address and instead uses an address from a free email service such as: Gmail,, Yahoo, AOL or a combination of these. It is likely a scam if the interviewer makes an excuse for using a personal email address by saying the company’s servers are down, or the company is experiencing too many problems with spam, or the company hasn’t yet set up its email system.
  • They present you with vague Job Requirements and Job Description.
  • Some emails from scammers are well-written, but many aren’t. If the email contains spelling, capitalization, punctuation, or grammatical mistakes, be on your guard.
  • Many attempted scams say the interview will take place online using an instant messaging service. ARES does NOT conduct interviews using instance messaging, phone apps or Google Hangouts. The scammers often include instructions for setting up and contacting the hiring manager and may ask for confidential information.
  • You get the job right away. After a quick phone or Instant Message interview, the ‘interviewer’ immediately contacts you to offer you the job.
  • You are guaranteed a work-from-home position.
  • You are offered a check to process before being interviewed. The perpetrators will often ask recipients to complete fake recruitment documentation, such as application forms, terms and conditions of employment or visa forms. A corporate name and logo is sometimes featured on the documentation without authority.
  • There is an early request for personal information such as address details, date of birth, resume (CV), passport details, etc.
  • Some scammers ask for your bank account information to set up direct deposit or transfer money to your account, or ask you to open a new bank account and provide the information to them. Other scammers will tell you to go to a website and fill out a credit report form or provide confidential information so they can “put you on the company insurance.” Identity theft scams try to get you to provide your Social Security number and birth date and other personal information.
  • Candidates are requested to contact other companies/individuals such as lawyers, bank officials, travel agencies, courier companies, visa/immigration processing agencies, etc.
  • The perpetrators may even offer to pay a large percentage of the fees requested and ask the candidate to pay the remaining amount.
  • Some victims say they’ve received checks that look like real cashier’s checks. They are instructed to deposit the check, keep some of the money for themselves, and send the rest of the money to someone else via Western Union or Money Gram. Then, a few days or weeks later, they get a call from the bank saying the check is fake. They have lost the money they sent.
  • Legitimate companies don’t ask for money. If you’re told you need to purchase software or pay for services, beware.
  • There is an insistence on urgency.

ARES employment policies and processes involve personal interviews in most cases and candidates who seek employment with us are never required to pay any sum of money in advance. To do so would be contrary to our business conduct guidelines and ethical practices.

What Should I Do?

Please Do Not

  • Respond to unsolicited business propositions and/or offers of employment from people with whom you are unfamiliar.
  • Disclose your personal or financial details to anyone you do not know.
  • Send any money. ARES does not ask for money transfers or payments from applicants to secure a job as an employee or as a contractor.
  • Engage in further communication if you believe the communication may be fraudulent.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply for a position at ARES?
Please begin by searching for an open position by utilizing our “job search” feature. You can choose to search by keywords in the “search terms” section, or you can filter by job category and/or location. If no jobs come up in your search, the parameters you have selected may be too narrow. Alternatively, if too many jobs come up your search, your parameters may be too broad. It is also possible that we may not have a job opening that suits your skills and needs at this time.
Can I just email my resume to someone at ARES?
No. All applicants must complete an online application through our website. At this time, we cannot accept unsolicited resumes, even those that are emailed directly to ARES managers or employees.
How do I fill out an online application?
After you have found a position that you are interested in, you will see an “Apply” section at the bottom of the job description. If you are new to ARES, you will need to select “New Resume/CV.” You will be prompted to either upload, copy/paste, or proceed without a resume/cv. Once you have completed that portion of the application, you will be asked to complete your contact information. You will need to enter a valid email address and password so that you can log into the system in the future. If you have previously applied to ARES, please select “Existing Resume/CV.” You will be prompted to enter the email address and password that you created previously.
In what format does my password need to be?
Your password must be a minimum of 8 characters and a maximum of 30 characters, respectively. Your password must have the following format: only contain letters and numbers (NO special characters such as: !, *, &, etc.) and have at least 1 upper case character.
I am having trouble submitting my online application. What should I do?
Please try using a different web browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
When will I hear back from ARES after I've applied to a job opening?
If your skills and qualifications listed on your resume meet the minimum requirements of the position, the ARES recruitment team will contact you directly to discuss your application in further detail. The time frame for each position varies depending on the position itself and how many applications we receive. Please note that we review applications in the order that we have received them.
What does “contingent upon award” mean?
If you see the phrase “this position is in support of a proposal effort pending a successful award of the contract,” or “this position is contingent upon award of a contract,” or similar text, it means that ARES is actively pursuing a new contract but the work has not been awarded yet. It can take weeks or months for the outcome of a proposal effort to be determined. As a result, it may take weeks or months before we reach out to candidates associated with these positions.
I saw an open position on the ARES career page but I don’t see it anymore. Is the position still open?
Unfortunately, if a position is no longer visible on our career page it has either been filled or closed and is no longer available.
Do all the job openings at ARES require a security clearance?
No. Security clearance requirements are clearly identified in each individual job description. If a clearance is associated with a job, the job description will state whether applicants must currently hold or be able to attain a specific type of clearance. If no clearance requirements are listed, the position does not require a clearance at this time.
How do I know if I am eligible to obtain a security clearance?
In order to obtain a US Security clearance, many requirements must be met. These requirements include, but are not limited to, US Citizenship and passing an extensive security background investigation. In extremely rare and special circumstances, and only with the permission of the government entity owning the classified information, could a non-US citizen obtain a clearance (a Limited Access Authorization (LAA) no higher than the Secret level). Additionally, the non-U.S. citizen would need to possess a unique or unusual skill or expertise that is urgently needed to support a specific U.S. Government contract involving access to specified classified information and a cleared or clearable U.S. citizen is not readily available. In addition, the LAA may be processed only with the concurrence of the Government Contracting Activity (GCA). Some examples of this exception may includea world class scientist, dignitary, or other high level friend of the US government. More information on security clearance eligibility can be found here, here, and here
Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to apply to jobs at ARES?
No, not all of our jobs require U.S. citizenship. If a position does require this status, it will be clearly identified in the job description. Depending on the job, there may be other eligibility requirements as well. ARES complies with Employment Eligibility Verification Requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. For information, go to USCIS. You can learn more about the E-Verify program or visit the U.S. Department of Justice E-Verify site.
